Fishing and Hunting Report

Fishing in our beautiful area is a staple for the people that live here. This winter, come visit us and see why in the Crosby area, the fishing is fine! Don't try to squeeze it in all in one day though, as our over 400 lakes within 20 minutes drive just might be an overload of fishing fun!

Some fun fishing facts about our area:

* The dozens of pit lakes with their crystal clear waters that dot our landscape are actually the result of mining ore from the surrounding area, and are now some of the finest trout, trophy pike and panfish fisheries in the state!

* The mine pits are very deep, with most exceeding 100 feet and several over 400 feet deep!

* Beyond the pit lakes, the Mississippi and Pine Rivers are here, as well as hundreds of natural lakes. Our area is one of the most water-concentrated areas of the state!

7/6/2008- Walleyes have been cooperating in the evenings on Rabbit, Serpent and Pelican in 18-24 FOW, with spinner rigs tipped with a crawler or a redtail producing the majority of the fish. There have also been a fair amount of fish caught in 12-16 FOW during the day either on cranks or jigs on these lakes. Northern pike can be caught all throughout the day on most lakes, either on a spinner fished around weeds or on a sucker under a bobber fished along the dropoffs. For some great action, give Bay or East Rabbit a try. Lots of great bass reports are coming in, with Rabbit, Horseshoe, Bay, Lower Mission, Clearwater, Cedar and June producing nice fish and lots of ‘em. 7” Powerworms and 5” Senkos have produced fish on all of these lakes and would be a safe bet for good action. Crappies and sunfish both have been coming from Black, Island, Ross, Bass and Little Mahnomen in/around the cabbage weeds, which in most of these lakes is 9-12 feet. A chartreuse Puddle Jumper worked slowly along the edges has been the ticket.

Although the fish are now deep and the action has slowed somewhat, there are still some limits of trout being caught in the pits. Manuel has been pretty good, as has Mahnomen 2. Had lots of people saying that the best Powerbait color this week has been green, with chartreuse and orange still catching a few fish.

Some decent musky reports from Cedar, with fish being caught after dark or just before daylight.
